Seekers and Sought was founded in the autumn of 1974 at my farm in East Lansing, Michigan.

Its name was derived from a classroom discussion of the prophetic novel (and later film) A Clock-Work Orange: it was suggested that when you think of the sign saying HOME, you can think of all as either a seeker or someone sought. Upon hearing this, I realized that we had the name if we exchanged "or" with "and." Thus was born Seekers and Sought predicated on the principle that all deeply thoughtful and culturally alert people are both seekers and sought, for that is the HOME for concerned humanists.

A fundamental idea from the beginning was that reality is not to be reduced to simple dualisitic formulas since we are in this case three or more beings: our selves, our seeking and our being sought.

Life and death, two sides of the same coin exists because of the dominant middle. The middle, that in between, not only makes it work, but also proves that meaningful thought and art are always more than the sum of any duality.

Knowledge, art and the existential attitude that underpin our consciousness are barely understood and yet apply to the living world of culture.

Seekers and Sought no longer exists as a physical entity but as a concept continues to welcome questions, answers and doubts in order to open doors and expand our mental challenges, this is one fundamental mission of SEEKERS & SOUGHT.
